Truls Moregard (SWE) has been nominated as the 2018 Dream Building Ambassador by ITTF High Performance & Development. The 16-year old Swedish shooting star has been on road to receiving the prestigious nomination since his participation in the 2013 ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge in New Jersey. By far the youngest player at the camp, he made up for his relative inexperience with persistence and determination to return even the most difficult balls. His remarkable work ethic and response to challenges at practice and training matches demonstrated his talent and earned him the respect of his older training partners at the training camp. But despite his hard work and determination, he was not selected for the Hopes team to attend the 2013 World Cadet Challenge, as preference was given to older players. However, a rule change the next year meant that only Hopes players who had attended the same year’s Challenge were allowed to participate, thus forcing Truls to miss out.
This temporary disappointment did not cause him to stop, as last year’s success at the World Junior Championships demonstrated. Accounting for China’s Niu Guankai, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, in the semi-final, he only stumbled at the final hurdle, losing to China’s Xue Fei, three years his senior, underlining the fact that he is one of the top European talents that can challenge East Asian players.
This year’s goal surely is attendance at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Truls lives and trains in Eslov at one of Sweden’s top clubs, where he is working towards his YOG qualification with his coach and mentor Peter Sartz, himself the coach behind the success of Michael Maze (DEN).
Congratulations on becoming the 2018 Dream Building Ambassador!
